FIBA chief Patrick Baumann says GB must wait until next year to learn Olympic fate

FIBA secretary-general Patrick Baumann has revealed that Great Britain's men and women may have to wait until next summer before learning whether they will get a place in the 2012 Olympic Games.

Speaking on a tour of the ongoing London construction works, in his capacity as a member of the IOC, Baumann said there was "no reason" why GB should not take part as hosts, despite basketball's status as the only team sport that does not give the home nation an automatic berth in the Games.

However he declared that FIBA are awaiting a "detailed plan" on British basketball's plans post-2012 before making any firm decision.

The news is likely to disappoint British Basketball, who have long been frustrated at the lack of clarity over the issue, having originally been told that the national teams would have to be "competitive" to earn an invite to London.
